The Problem Of Domestic Violence :: Violence Against Women Essays
An issue has gotten known and to many, they feel that better late than never that the overall population has paid heed. This issue has been a no-no for hundreds of years and in the mid nineties it has decided to leave itself alone known, the issue that I am discussing is abusive behavior at home, it has destroyed families, what's more, dampened the casualties for a considerable length of time and now due to the "trial of the century" we at last are permitted to examine it in detail, unafraid of retaliation, presently we get the chance to acquaint ourselves with it and in the long run after we become acquainted with about it we can, through treatment, dispose of it. In this paper, I will talk about issues with the purported pandemic of abusive behavior at home. This whole paper will be about aggressive behavior at home, and in view of that I feel it is imperative to take note of that "in most families people don't lock in in truly oppressive behavior" (The Brown U.), but since the media feels that it is their open obligation to hoodwink us into accepting that this issue is an "epidemic" (Domestic V.) we feel that, that is the situation. Webster's word reference characterizes plague as "a fast spreading of a malady; to numerous individuals at the equivalent time", this isn't the situation with abusive behavior at home, one it didn't simply occur overnight, it has recently been advanced for the time being, aggressive behavior at home has been going on from for as long as anybody can recollect and most likely more remote than that, what's more, two, this isn't influencing numerous individuals at the equivalent timem, in light of the fact that, as I've expressed previously, "in most families people don't take part in truly oppressive behavior". On the off chance that you as the peruser gets anything out of this paper, it is critical to me as the essayist, that you find that, while aggressive behavior at home is a serious issue for certain families, it is in no way, shape or form a pestilence. The significant explanation aggressive behavior at home has gotten so across the board over the most recent few years is a result of the O. J. Simpson preliminary, as one individual put it "the O. J. Simpson case would accomplish for abusive behavior at home what Anita Hill accomplished for sexual harassment" (Domestic V.). The preliminary of the century brought a much required consideration regarding an issue that for a really long time was pushed to the heating surface; aggressive behavior at home was a significant issue for the situation and it got clear, through the mass exposure of the case, that ladies weren't telling a shameful lie every one of these years, on account of "the murder of Nicole Brown ... the media would concentrate decisively on and

Console RentingYou would be shocked how many people are prepared to give you money just so they can rent out your Xbox or your PlayStation that you barely use so they can play games with their friends at the weekends. Not all people have money to buy a console themselves so they will rather rent one out for a fraction of the price than to save up for it.FINAL WORDAs you can see there are all kinds of business ideas you can try and see what works for you best.Donât get discouraged if your business fails because all that means that youâve either done something wrong which isnât that big of a deal or something unexpected happened. The good thing is that in the process of figuring out which business to start and actually trying it out, you are learning more and more skills which later might be useful for some other businesses.Feel free to come up with your own business ideas as well as these ideas are just a few from thousands more waiting for you to find them and start your own small business.

The Veldt Ray Bradbury Essay Example For Students
The Veldt Ray Bradbury Essay Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, and The Illustrated Man are three of Ray Bradburyââ¬â¢s most famous books. Ray Bradbury has written thousands of published items from poetry to short stories to three hundred page books; he has done it all. Bradburyââ¬â¢s best writing combines a great imagination with a poetic style of its own. Ray Bradbury, an American author was born on August 22, 1920 in Waukegan, Illinois. Ray is the third son of Leonard Spaulding Bradbury and Esther Marie Moberg Bradbury. In the fall of 1926 his family moved to Tucson, Arizona, only to return to Waukegan again in May of 1927. By 1931 he began writing his own stories on butcher paper. His childhood was very important to him because it was a constant source of intense situations, emotions, and feelings that generate great stories. As a teen he was most inspired by seeing ââ¬Å"The Hunchback of Notre Dame.â⬠In 1932 his father was laid off at his job as an electrical lineman, the family moved to T ucson and again returned to Waukegan the following year. In 1934 the Bradbury family moved to Los Angeles, California. Bradbury graduated from Los Angeles high school in 1938. From 1938 to 1942 he sold newspapers on the street corners of Los Angeles. All of his spare time was spent on a typewriter. Ray decided to become a full time writer just one year after graduating from high school. Bradburyââ¬â¢s first published collection of short stories was Dark Carnival. His short stories have appeared in more than 1,000 school curriculum ââ¬Å"recommended readingâ⬠anthologies, but Bradburyââ¬â¢s major breakthrough came in 1950 when The Martian Chronicles was published. The Martian Chronicles is a science fiction book that describes the first attempts of Earth people to conquer and colonize Mars, and the unknown consequences that are in store for the earth people. ââ¬Å"Science-fantasyâ⬠was the nickname given to Bradburyââ¬â¢s style of writing after the critics read his first big success. Next came The Illustrated Man and then, in 1953 Fahrenheit 451, which is considered to be Bradburyââ¬â¢s most famous novel. ââ¬Å"A scathing indictment of censorship set in a future world where the written word is forbidden.â⬠(Touponce) In an attempt to salvage their history and culture, a group of rebels memorize entire works of literature and philosophy as their books are burned by the oppressive state. Bradbury hasnââ¬â¢t stopped writing after 63 years of professional writing. He just released another book entitled From the Dust Returned. People believe this will be his last book. With it he leaves a great legacy behind. Bradbury has won numerous awards including: four Best American Short Story Collections, the Henry Memorial Award, the World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement, the Grand Master Award from the Science Fiction Writers of America, the PEN Center USA West Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters Award. Bradburyââ¬â¢s writing has been honored in many ways, but perhaps the most unusual was when an Apollo astronaut named the Dandelion Crater on the Moon after Bradburyââ¬â¢s novel, Dandelion Wine. Outside of his literary achievements, Bradbury was the idea consultant who wrote the basic scenario for the United States Pavilion at the 1964 New York Worldââ¬â¢s Fair. He conceived the metaphors for Spaceship Earth, EPCOT, Disney World, and he contributed to the conception of the Orbitron space ride at Euro-Disney, France. ââ¬Å"Go to the edge of a cliff and jump off, build your wings on the way down.â⬠(Bradbury)Bradbury is known primarily as a writer of science fiction, and childrenââ¬â¢s literature. When critics discuss his work today it is often about his two works from the 1950ââ¬â¢s, Fahrenheit 451 and The Martian Chronicles. ââ¬Å"Bradbury is usually accused of narrative inconsistencies and poor knowledge of science.â⬠(Touponce) It is ironic that his generic logic of antinomies never allows him to consider the possibility that Bradburyââ¬â¢s surrational imaginings to use a phrase coined by Gaston Bachelard that Andre Breton employed when he discussed surrealismââ¬â¢s relationships to scientific knowledge. Bradburyââ¬â¢s work should be studied for its rich imaginative vision, and then for the way in which it links up with the larger literary movements of the twentieth century. In short, at the current state of our knowledge of this genre and how it demands to be read, everyone is his own Aristotle. (Touponce)The Martian Chronicles portrays the colonization and destruction of the nearly mystical and telepathic Martian civilization by waves of Earthmen, is not to be understood as a simple reflection of social and economical conditions. The writing can be seen in sudden fissures that accompany them. Craftily observing that many works of science fiction ostensibly about the future seem to offer us a retrospective glance as well. Carrouges explains that Bradburyââ¬â¢s Martian Chronicles expresses that guilt of the twentieth centuryââ¬â¢s destruction of exotic and primitive civilizations. (Touponce)John J. McLaughlin wrote that ââ¬Å"much of the bulk of Bradburyââ¬â¢s fiction has been concerned with a single theme-the loss of human values to the machine.â⬠This becomes apparent in The Martian Chronicles. Bradbury deals with, â⬠the initial attempts to successfully establish a footing on Mars.â⬠chronicled, â⬠the rise and fall of the Mars colonyâ⬠(Jennifer Hicks)Bradbury shows his deepest honesty and courage in making so implicit and unmistakable a criticism of the destructive forces he sees about his own land. Certainly he has pictured a place so awful, so replete with destruction, that as readers, we want no part of it. We can imagine easily that Bradbury is responding not only to his authorial need to show us how similar our decline can be to the decline of Mars in the book. (Robert Peltier)When asked in an interview what he thought about censorship he said, ââ¬Å"You have to have taste.â⬠His opinion on screenwriters these days, ââ¬Å"they are just too lazy to w rite without profanity.â⬠Ray Bradbury has been giving us things to read for over sixty years. Bradburyââ¬â¢s writing style has that something that makes everyone interested. When asked if he considers himself a teacher he said, ââ¬Å"As a writer you must be. You canââ¬â¢t be self-conscious about it, but if you do something good someone might imitate it. So if you like my writing, you may very well imitate my passion.â⬠(Bradbury)Bibliography:

Toulouse Lautrec free essay sample
Journal of Suzanne Valadon, model and apprentice of Henry Toulouse-Lautrec. pans, July 25 1889 Its a calm Sunday afternoon. I Just woke up next to Toulouse. Hes still snoring, probably due to the large amount of alcohol he had last night. Absinthe in abundance in the crazy bohemian Parisians nights. Toulouse always drinks too much, no one realizes because everyone enjoys drinking every night but I can see hes not far from being an alcoholic. Its going to kill him someday. He had that funny walk when we got home, he looks as a child, with his short height, staggering from left to ight. I know its a subject he doesnt usually talks about, his height. I heard the story from someone at a table one night. He was 14, no 13, when his accident happened. After fracturing his thighbone, the break didnt heal properly and his legs stopped growing, meanwhile the rest of his body kept a normal size. We will write a custom essay sample on Toulouse Lautrec or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page During his convalescence period he got pushed by his mother to paint and draw. He didnt spend time with children his age but rather develop his art skills. Anyhow Toulouse never had a good health maybe its because of his origins. He confessed that he came, from an aristocrat family keeping marriage among them. Incest never turns out good. Toulouse has a certain fascination for brothels. We hadnt seen each other for a week now because he was in one of them. This place of sexual enjoyment is its little shelter; he enjoys the environment of love and pleasures. He has become very close to all the prostitutes; he has started to gain their trust. He stays days and nights, watching and painting the females lifestyle in the house, especially in their intimate moments. Women have become one of his favorites subject in his work. Also Toulouse began to work on posters for the cabaret the Moulin Rouge. I always see him with a toothbrush in his pocket to splat on the lithographic stone to produce tonal effects. I am always captivated when I watch him work doing lithography. I see him starting from scratches; he never has a sketch but instead starts directly on the lithographic stone from memory. Yesterday he was doing a poster called Le Goulue au Moulin Rouge, He did different patterns with flat planes placing Valentine the oneless one in the middle, this really flexible dancer. I like how simple and expressive the poster was, keeping a very communicative form. He created a new style, inspired by the Japanese art principally. Japanese art became in vogue in Paris. It has been 35 years that Japan re-opened its trade and they would send porcelains, woodcuts, and screens. Then in the 1960s, ukiyo-e, Japanese wood prints, became popular and originated an inspiration for many artists that I know. When we go out to le Chat Noir Night Club, we get some drinks share some laughs. There are moments when we dont hear Toulouse anymore. He is sketching the scenes; part of the bohemian lifestyle is to incorporate your art in your everyday life. He was very good at capturing moments and people. He would draw the crowd scenes focusing on one or two fgures. Hes always very detached in his paintings but keeps a compassionate ee e Chat Noir Night Club is also a place where he gathered with artists. They like to collaborate and exchange their views. I often hear him talk to Thà ©ophile-Alexandre Steinlen and Georges Auriol. Steinlen and Toulouse have a very similar style, and there is a constant rivalry between them for certain commissions. When I see Toulouse frustrated chugging some absinthe I know they Just argued before. However I appreciate Steinleins company; he showed me his new poster for le Chat Noir with beautiful cat illustrations. I admire Toulouse, his wide variety of paintings, drawings, etchings, lithographs, and posters, as well as illustrations for various contemporary newspapers are mind-blowing. Many artists inspire him and he inspires many. What I like the most is that he incorporates the styles of contemporary artists like the painters Edgar Degas and Paul Gauguin. The Japanese art is becoming very trendy and I can see its impact on his work on many elements as sharp delineation, oblique angles, flat areas of color and asymmetric composition. I hope he wont sleep all day. He is supposed to teach me painting today. I am very grateful for everything he did for me. He taught me his techniques, how he applies the paint in long, with thinbrushtrokes and also his use vibrant colors. I think Ill wake him up soon.

USS Maine Explosion and the Spanish-American War
USS Maine Explosion and the Spanish-American War The sinking of USS Maine took place on February 15, 1898, and contributed to the outbreak of the Spanish-American War that April. After years of unrest in Cuba, tensions began to re-escalate in the 1890s. Seeking to calm the American public, which had been calling for intervention, and to protect business interests, President William McKinley ordered the US Navy to dispatch a warship to Havana. Arriving in January 1898, USS Maine sank on February 15 after an explosion tore through the ship. Initial reports concluded that Maine had been sunk by a naval mine. Sparking a wave of outrage across the United States, the loss of the ship helped push the nation towards war. Though a later report in 1911 also concluded that a mine caused the explosion, some began to believe that it was the result of a coal dust fire. A subsequent investigation in 1974 also favored the coal dust theory though its findings have been contested. Background Since the late 1860s, efforts had been underway in Cuba to end Spanish colonial rule. In 1868, the Cubans began a ten-year rebellion against their Spanish overlords. Though it was crushed in 1878, the war had generated widespread support for the Cuban cause in the United States. Seventeen years later, in 1895, the Cubans again rose up in the revolution. To combat this, the Spanish government dispatched General Valeriano Weyler y Nicolau to crush the rebels. Arriving in Cuba, Weyler began a brutal campaign against the Cuban people which involved the use of concentration camps in rebellious provinces. This approach led to the death of over 100,000 Cubans and Weyler was promptly nicknamed the Butcher by the American press. Stories of atrocities in Cuban were played up by the yellow press, and the public put increasing pressure on Presidents Grover Cleveland and William McKinley to intervene. Working through diplomatic channels, McKinley was able to defuse the situation and Weyler was recalled to Spain in late 1897. The following January, supporters of Weyler began a series of riots in Havana. Concerned for American citizens and business interests in the area, McKinley elected to send a warship to the city. Arriving in Havana After discussing this course of action with the Spanish and receiving their blessing, McKinley passed his request to the US Navy. To fulfill the presidents orders, the second-class battleship USS Maine was detached from the North Atlantic Squadron at Key West on January 24, 1898. Commissioned in 1895, Maine possessed four 10 guns and was capable of steaming at 17 knots. With a crew of 354, Maine had spent the entirety of its brief career operating along the eastern seaboard. Commanded by Captain Charles Sigsbee, Maine entered Havana harbor on January 25, 1898. USS Maine entering Havana harbor, January 1898. US Department of Defense Anchoring in the center of the harbor, Maine was afforded the usual courtesies by the Spanish authorities. Though the arrival of Maine had a calming effect on the situation in the city, the Spanish remained wary of American intentions. Wishing to prevent a possible incident involving his men, Sigsbee restricted them to the ship and no liberty was given. In the days after Maines arrival, Sigsbee met regularly with the US Consul, Fitzhugh Lee. Discussing the state of affairs on the island, they both recommended that another ship be sent when it was time for Maine to depart. Rear Admiral Charles D. Sigsbee. US Naval History and Heritage Command Loss of Maine At 9:40 on the evening of February 15, the harbor was lit by a massive explosion that ripped through the forward section of Maine as five tons of powder for the ships guns detonated. Destroying the forward third of the ship, Maine sank into the harbor. Immediately, assistance came from the American steamer City of Washington and the Spanish cruiser Alfonso XII, with boats circling the burning remains of the battleship to collect the survivors. All told, 252 were killed in the blast, with another eight dying ashore in the days that followed. Investigation Throughout the ordeal, the Spanish showed great compassion for the injured and respect for the dead American sailors. Their behavior led Sigsbee to inform the Navy Department that public opinion should be suspended until further report, as he felt that the Spanish were not involved in the sinking of his ship. To investigate the loss of Maine, the Navy swiftly formed a board of inquiry. Due to the state of the wreck and a lack of expertise, their investigation was not as thorough as subsequent efforts. On March 28, the board announced that the ship had been sunk by a naval mine. The boards finding unleashed a wave of public outrage across the United States and fueled calls for war. While not the cause of the Spanish-American War, shouts of Remember the Maine! served to accelerate the approaching diplomatic impasse over Cuba. On April 11, McKinley asked Congress for permission to intervene in Cuba and ten days later ordered a naval blockade of the island. This final step led to Spain declaring war on April 23, with the United States following suit on the 25th. Aftermath In 1911, a second inquiry was made into the sinking of Maine following a request to remove the wreck from the harbor. Constructing a cofferdam around the ships remains, the salvage effort permitted investigators to probe the wreck. Examining the bottom hull plates around the forward reserve magazine, investigators found that they were bent inward and back. Using this information they again concluded that a mine had been detonated under the ship. While accepted by the Navy, the boards findings were disputed by experts in the field, some of whom put forward a theory that the combustion of coal dust in a bunker adjacent to the magazine had sparked the explosion. Workers preparing to raise the wreck of USS Maine, 1910. US Naval History and Heritage Command The case of USS Maine was reopened in 1974, by Admiral Hyman G. Rickover who believed that modern science might be able to provide an answer to the ships loss. After consulting experts and reexamining the documents from the first two investigations, Rickover and his team concluded that the damage was inconsistent with that caused by a mine. Rickover stated that the most likely cause was a coal dust fire. In the years after Rickovers report, his findings have been disputed and to this day there has been no final answer as to what caused the explosion.

Leadership within Non-Profits (Identify a Non-Profit) Essay
Leadership within Non-Profits (Identify a Non-Profit) - Essay Example The volunteers govern the American Red Cross. It is located in Washington. Bonnie McElveen- Hunter is the board of governorsââ¬â¢ chairperson Gail J. McGovern is the current American red cross president. Leadership in the American Red cross aims at attracting sufficient funds or capital and making sound strategies. Due to this, the organization has strong leaders that aim to these goals (Jones 35). The leaders in the American Red Cross use transformational skills, which is about thinking and understanding the problem in an organization. It is also about thinking, understanding, and setting the goals for employees. The goals set are challenging but workers can achieve them through hard work. This is important because without the challenging goals, employees or workers would not be motivated to extend their full effort to work. This achievement of challenging goals helps the leader to develop his leadership qualities and makes him better equipped to achieve hard tasks. For instance, American Red Cross leadership has set out a fierce campaign to encourage people to donate blood and funds. This is done through the creation of awareness among the people both domestically and internationally. The American Red Cross process and distribute the collected blood. Transformational leadership at American Red Cross facilitates and redefines peopleââ¬â¢s vision and mission (Robbins 77). It also renews peopleââ¬â¢s commitment and restructures their systems to accomplish a certain goal. Thus, a mutual relationship stimulates and elevates follower to become leaders. In addition, it may also convert leaders to become moral agents. Transformational leadership should therefore be grounded on moral foundation. For example, when disaster strikes the American Red Cross provides food, health, and shelter to ensure that victims have basic human needs and to enable the get back to the way things were (Jones 41-44). Leadership at the American Red Cross aims at

Techniques for Providing Fresh Water to Arid Regions
Techniques for Providing Fresh Water to Arid Regions Student ID Number: 36845 Introduction Water is vital as it does not have a substitute and is a finite resource (Kaplan, 2011). The demand for water is ever increasing but the supply is decreasing or is constant. This demand is brought up by factors such as population increase, industrialization and agricultural needs. Some areas receive the right amount of whereas, others do not receive the right amount. These regions are known as arid regions where rainfall and water supply is less yearly causing droughts. The report will examine the feasibility of two techniques namely desalination and building dams and reservoirs for supplying fresh water to arid regions considering factors such as cost, technology, location and water quality. Background Kaplan (2011) points out that there is approximately 36 million cubic kilometres of fresh water available on the earth which equals to 3% and the rest 97% is salt water. 77% of the fresh water available is locked up in the polar icecaps, glaciers and icebergs, less than 1% in fresh water lakes, springs and rivers. The rest is found in plants, atmosphere and human bodies. However, another argument put forward by Kaplan (2011) was that just over a half of the fresh water available on the earth is being used. This means that there is plenty of fresh water available but is inefficiently used, wasted in simpler terms and not evenly distributed across the world. Therefore, arid regions are formed as they do not receive the right amount of water demanded from their population in that area. UNEP (1992) reports about 47% of the surface of the earth being arid or semi-arid. This shows almost half of the world is without water whereas, some places have plenty of fresh water available. Another r eport of UNEP (1997) claims about 2 billion people live in arid regions and in many cases in very poor conditions. This shows the need and importance of development of ideas and techniques to provide fresh water to these regions. Source: FAO (2002) Figure 1 above shows the percentage and the distance in hectares (ha) of the surface of the earth that can be classified as an arid or a semi-arid region. From the table; Africa and Asia have the largest extension of arid zones, they account for more than a half of worlds arid regions (FAO, 2002). Comparison of options: Desalination According to Kucera (2014), desalination is defined as the ââ¬Å"process of removing dissolved solids, such as salts and minerals, from water.â⬠Desalination was used practically first in the sixteenth and the seventeenth centuries by sailors. Desalination is sometimes referred as distillation and sailors back in the sixteenth century used simple distillation technique to evaporate sea water and collecting the fresh water. The figure below from Kucera (2014) shows the total desalination capacity by different countries since 2003. The highest percentages of desalination capacity are led by the Middle East countries i.e. Saudi Arabia and UAE followed closely by; Spain, USA, China, Algeria, Australia, Israel, and India, respectively. Figure 2 Kucera (2014) Figure 2 above also shows that desalination is a process that is mainly operated by the developing countries. Not a single African nation is seen in the figure means that the most arid region of the world is not using desalination process. Keyes , Conrad Fahy, Tansel, Berrin (2012) claim desalination have two major technological methods involved i.e. membrane and evaporative also known as thermal. Middle East use the evaporative technology while, the USA depend on the membrane process of desalination as it is more technologically advanced and has a cost advantage. ââ¬Å"Desalination water treatment plants must be managed in an environmentally compatible manner and requires significant environmental assessment efforts depending on the quality of the concentrate and geographical location of the facilityâ⬠(ibid, 2012). This shows the process of desalination for providing fresh water to arid region is quite costly and requires attention to the environment as only developing countr ies like the UAE and the USA can afford to use. Building dams reservoirs: A dam is a structure built along rivers or streams that are used to control the water flow and store the water in reservoirs during the rainy season and release as needed during the times of drought. Reservoirs are artificial lakes that store the water (UNEP, 2000). The stored water is used in several ways; irrigation, domestic use, producing hydro-electricity and leisure activities. .Abu-zeid and.El-Shibini (2010) states ââ¬Å"the only main source for Egyptââ¬â¢s water is the River Nile.â⬠Therefore Egypt is also considered part of the arid regions of the world. The Aswan High Dam was built on the River Nile in Egypt to control floods, produce HEP- Hydro-electric power and irrigate their lands in 1971. The dam had positive impacts on rapid growing population of Aswan province. The tourism industry and the fishers noted a growth in their businesses. The majority of the Egyptian population also depends on the river for its water for domestic and industrial use. The figure bel ow represents the area in hectares-ha of irrigation in countries of Africa in 1997. (University of Michigan, n.d.) The figure shows Egypt irrigated 3.3 million hectares in 1997, and that number will keep on increasing as population increases (University of Michigan, n.d). However, some negative impacts are noted by Abu-zeid and El-Shibini (2010) that during the construction of the dam several Egyptian residents and monuments had to immigrate to the cities of Lower Egypt. The dam being 111 metres high and 3830 metres long costs the Egyptian government about 1 billion dollars (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2014). This shows building dams and reservoirs can have some drawbacks in the short run like cost, re-settlement, natural disasters and water borne diseases but in the long run it also improves the economy of the country and it helps the population of the country in irrigation, power and leisure activities. Recommendation and Conclusion It can be concluded that to provide water to arid regions of the world both the techniques are feasible. Desalination works when the region has a source of salt or seawater. Although, it is quite costly and not very friendly to the environment, it is now widely used in many countries which prove it to be efficient. On the other hand, building dams and reservoirs is very efficient and advantageous to the economy of the country. It attracts tourists, irrigates land, provides hydro-electric power and stores water for domestic use by the population of the country. However, it is also very expensive to build a dam or a reservoir, during the construction people have to be moved, diseases are prone from the water and highly depends whether the region has a source of water like river flowing. Thus, looking at the differences in requirements desalination is better than dams and reservoirs to provide fresh water to arid regions. References: Encyclopedia Britannica. (2014). Aswan High Dam. Fact Verses Fiction in OBriens The Things They Carried Essay
Fact Verses Fiction in O'Brien's The Things They Carried "The difference between fairy tales and war stories is that fairy tales begin with 'Once upon a time,' while war stories begin with 'Shit, I was there!'" (Lomperis 41). How does one tell a good war story? Is it important to be accurate to the events that took place? Does the reader need to trust the narrator? In The Things They Carried, Tim O'Brien examines what it takes to tell a good war story. He uses his own experiences in Vietnam in conjunction with his imagination to weave together a series of short stories into a novel. First, the reader must understand just what makes a good "war story". The protagonist of the novel, Tim O'Brien, gives us his interpretation of it in the chapter "How to Tell a True War Story". A true war story is never moral. It does not instruct, nor encourage virtue, nor suggest models of proper human behavior, nor restrain men from doing the things men have always done. If a story seems moral, do not believe it. If at the end of a war story you feel uplifted, or if you feel that some small bit if rectitude has been salvaged from the larger waste, then you have been made the victim of a very old and terrible lie. There is no rectitude whatsoever. There is no virtue. As a first rule of thumb, therefore, you can tell a true war story by its absolute and uncompromising allegiance to obscenity and evil (O'Brien 68-69). With this concept, we can assess and place value on the stories presented in The Things They Carried. Yet, it is still not that simple. The reader is continually challenged to question what is real and what is imagined. The evaluation of each narrator is constant. While the protagonist continues to remind the ... ...y matter if they're true stories (Lomperis 54). Works Cited Bonn, Maria S. "Can Stories Save Us? Thinking of the natural disasters happening around the world In 2013, for example, Tornado In Oklahoma, the Unite States, Flash Flood In Gingham, China, Tornado In Salaams, Japan, It Is generally known that the extreme fluctuation of weather and natural disasters are caused by the global warming. Scientists tried to figure out why the global warming exists and concluded that the primary contribution to climate change is from the quantities of heat-trapping gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO) that emit into the atmosphere (Palmer, Charles, and Stefan). There are many factor causes Global warming, such as CO emissions from fossil fuel burning power plants, CO emissions from burning gasoline for transportation, deforestation, increase in usage of chemical fertilizers on farmland, or etc. However, deforestation is the most important causes of global warming, because the deforestation not only releases large amounts of carbon, but also reduce the amount of carbon capture on the planet and a mount of oxygen, clean and fresh alarm for humans and animals.Humans are believed to be the contributor with the rise In level of CO. A huge amount of paper products usage Is the one of satellites and contributes to the mass deforestation of our world. With every passing day, It Is discovered that global warming now is worse than before; people turn to purchase green product with hope to have better world. It seems that ââ¬Å"greenâ⬠and ââ¬Å"sustainability are everywhere and businesses are all looking for some sort of connection with anything ââ¬Å"greenâ⬠and ââ¬Å"sustainability.A numerous companies, which gain a large number of profits from society, startup plan to preserve the world environment and promise to help the world live better. However, some companies use greenmailing, misleading green- based advertising campaigns and marketing to increase their sales. In other words, they want only to take this advantage of ââ¬Å"greenâ⬠to raise their profits. Wa lter, the world's largest retailer, accelerates their environmental concerns by leading In paper consumption reduction.Walter uses a smart packaging on their product to cuts down on their paper packaging usage (ââ¬Å"Global Responsibility). Can Walter's smarter packaging on the products lessen the global warming? American people and some organization and institute doubt in Walter's activities. This act of worry about lobar warming can misinform consumers Walter less cost and high profit. Global Warming and Cutting Trees We all know that high level of CO in atmosphere causes climate change, resulting in natural calamities and yield crop agriculture. Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, wide spread melting if snow and Ice, and rising global average sea levelâ⬠(Frank 2). Global warming will be good for some area, where Is too cold for agriculture. The global average temperatur e Is quiet rising, but many areas are become drier, drought, and flood. Some areas will be winners, while other will be losers, because the temperature zones where most people live are becoming production and water resources. The global warming is severe issue that everybody should to turn in and help to solve it. Trees play an important role to protect world from heat and trap Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Tree also ââ¬Å"produce oxygen, shade sidewalks, homes and storefronts, cool cities, provide habitat for wildlife, clean the air of pollutants, protect people from harmful ultraviolet rays, absorb storm water, prevent soil erosion, shelter homes from winter winds, beautify ties, and sequester carbon dioxide, a critical role to play in combating global warmingâ⬠(Oliver 123). Forests help to protect world from heat and improve air quality. Trees help by removing (sequestering) CO from the atmosphere during photosynthesis to form carbohydrates that are used in pla nt structure/function and return oxygen back into the atmosphere as a byproductâ⬠(Bianca). Therefore, trees act as carbon sinks, alleviating the global warming. ââ¬Å"On average, one acre of new forest can sequester about 2. 5 tons of carbon annually. Young trees absorb CO at a rate of 13 pounds per tree each year. Trees reach their most productive stage of carbon storage at about 10 years at which point they are estimated to absorb 48 pounds of CO per yearâ⬠(Bianca). At that rate, trees release enough oxygen back into the atmosphere for life on earth. Planting trees could reduce carbon and consequently save consumers on utility bills, because trees also reduce the greenhouse effect by shading houses and office buildings. Moreover, when the world cools down, reducing the need for air conditioning, which in turn reduces the amount of fossil fuels burned to produce electricity. To sum up, human being uses paper such as buying nee cereal box, meaning that he or she cut tree , reduced carbon capture, destroyed world air filter and consumed fossil fuels.Greenmailing After some research has revealed that cutting trees has several adverse effects on the climate. Many businesses are sincerely committed to making the world a better, but for some businesses, environmental issues are little more than a convenient advertisement. Some businesses persuade people to buy their products; by claiming that buying their products end environmental issues. In 1999, the Oxford English dictionary defines the word ââ¬Ëgreenmailing in their dictionary as ââ¬Å"disinformation assassinated by an organization so as to present an environmentally responsible public imageâ⬠.When a firm tried to make advertising that they are environmentally friendly and they are concerning about climate changing, clean air, clear water, or no chemical than on actually putting into place practices that are environmentally friendly. For example, bottled water companies are trying to go gree n, but actually greenmailing, by coming up with catchphrases ââ¬â partially made out of some sort of plant material. They are trying to convince their customers that drinking their bottled eater reduce plastic waste and they conceal what kind of plants are being used to make this stuff. In 2005 Walter also has announced plan in public to be more environmentally friendly. It launched its sustainability campaign. It set goals to have 100 percent renewable energy, to create zero waste, and to make more environmentally friendly products Jasmine). ââ¬Å"Wall-Mart's environmental goals center around reducing waste, environmentally friendly packaging, offering environmentally more energy efficientâ⬠Jasmine). ââ¬Å"On February 1, 2007, Walter unveiled ââ¬ËSustainability 360â⬠², its company-wide emphasis on environmental sustainability' (Annie). In 2008-2009, Walter has taken a zero-waste stance and have started implementing various programs. One of its interesting programs is rethinking packaging reduced paper consumption by redesigning their packaging. However, according to research by the nonprofit Institute for Local Self-Reliance claimed that ââ¬Å"Walter's heavily-promoted sustainability initiatives have done more to improve the company's image than to help the environmentâ⬠(CTD. In ââ¬Å"Walter Accused of Greenmailingâ⬠). This is because of increase in sales after launching sustainability campaign in 2005.Walter's revenue increased from $312 billion in 2005 to $419 lion in 2010 (Stacy 4). This report slightly inspires writers and Journalists to take a closer look at what Walter really care about environmental or short-term profit. Wall-Mart rethinking packaging Walter, the large discount department store in the United States, now has the total area of all U. S. Stores, 698 million square feet, larger than those of the island of Manhattan, 641 million square feet. Furthermore, Walter increases its international store almost tripled, from about 1 ,600 to 4,600 stores. After Walter launched its sustainability campaign in 2005, the number of Americans who had an unfavorable IEEE of Walter decreased from 38 percent to 20 percent in 2010 (Stacy 4); moreover, it sells 35 percent more stuff. Because of the fact that Walter is the largest retail store in the United States and their sales are significant, Americans expect from Walter with environmental issues. Walter is introducing itself the leader of preserve natural resources such as trees, water and fuel. It is trying to find new ways to protect the planet.Working with its suppliers to rethink its processes and product presentation, Walter plans to cut back on their paper products to reduce cutting trees that capture CO and generate fresh air. From toys and footwear to cooking products, Walter has reduced its packaging across the boardâ⬠(Ron). This large firm improved and redesigned the footwear replenishment boxes by using smarter packaging on its footwear box (see Figure 1). ââ¬Å"Sustainable packaging for shoes has also been revampedâ⬠(Ron). ââ¬Å"The new box uses Just a single source of paper, fits multiple pairs of shoesâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Global Responsibility').Figure : Old and Redesigned Shoes Box In the result, in 2011, during the first 10 months, Walter used about 14. 4 million footwear replenishment boxes, reducing paper consumption by 692 tons (1 mounds), the environmental equivalent of more than 2,500 trees. Redesigned the footwear box uses 43 percent less paper and reduces costs by 28 percent (ââ¬Å"Global Responsibility'). Conversely, ââ¬Å"each person in the United States uses 749 pounds (keg) of paper every yearâ⬠(Sam). In other words, now current U. S. Population is 316. 80 million, so the total paper consumption per year is 118,641,600 tons (237,283,200,000 pounds). If comparing the reduced number paper consumption of Walter to paper consumption of all people in the United States per year, it is very Is Walte r Going Green? Wall-Mart's steps to saving world's resources are admirable; however, the company has a long way to go proving their commitment about the environment issues to people. Some writers and Journalists consequently may think that Walter is environmentally destructive and greedy. However, ââ¬Å"some businesses are indeed as destructive as many suspect, others are among the world's strongest positive forces for environmental sustainability' Oared 273).Therefore, what Walter have done to keep the planet healthy, lessen global warming, it is a good start for saving the world. The magnitude and cause of global climate change are huge. Only Walter cannot hanged the world. To resolve the climate change, individual has essential powerless to change the world or to make sustainable future. ââ¬Å"None of us can change the world single-handedly' (Alex 270) and if people wants ââ¬Å"to work at this work alone[, it] is to failâ⬠(CTD. In ââ¬Å"On Earth Day'). Since this truth is well known, why Walter is still working with smart packaging project. The reasons that Walter's chief executives raise their global warming concerns are saving their money, avoiding environmental disasters and reducing criticism from employees, consumers and government Oared 273). In this case, it may be called win-win situation. Not only Walter can save their costs, but also world can lose lesser natural resources. Moreover, ââ¬Å"[w]e have to balance the environmental against the economy Oared 274). Even Walter get high sales, but the number of profits that it get lesser than the amount of money that it will be used to try to fix the environmental problem.According to John Holders, the top White House science advisor, stated that ââ¬Å"solving problems of climate change would cost the United States 2 percent of our gross domestic product by the year 2050, but that not solving those problems would damage the economy by 20 percent o 30 percent of G. D. Pâ⬠(CTD. In ââ¬Å"W ill Big Business Save the Earthâ⬠). However, if Walter really want to reduce paper consumption permanently, a key challenge to long-term sustainability is less consumption. These days, people do not buy only what they want, they buy too much products.Companies offer promotion to attract customers to buy more. Conclusion Carbon dioxide emitted to atmosphere and makes the world hotter. Deforestation causes carbon emission, which can trap heat and raise global average temperature by 2-3 Celsius within next 50 years, without resolving this environmental issue. The rise in temperature impacts such as poor agriculture, food production and water resources, which cause people living. Tree plays an important role to capture CO. Using more paper, tree is more being cut. Several large firms are trying to help this environmental issue, global warming.People turn in to buy green product with believe that buying green products can lessen the global warming or climate change. However, Some bu siness are trying to take this advantage, by producing fake green product or slogan with Just attractive customers to buy, but not alleviate global warming issue. Walter, in this case, has several programs to help, but important one is smart packaging, which reduce paper consumption. The amount of paper usage is not low significant but this is a good start for one company to lessen global promotion to attractive customers buy more than they need.Since the root of the problems of climate change is over purchasing and needing more convenient life. Therefore, if Walter really wants to make the better world and away from people's criticism, it should sell their product less. The Energy And Environmental Design System Essay - 1507 Words
INTRODUCTION In reaction to our current global environmental crisis, the idea of eliminating negative environmental impacts attracts environmental policy makers and markets to sustainable or green design. As a result, a variety of industries have adopted sustainable design, including consumer goods, fashion, landscape design and architecture to meld striking design and function. However, the realm of architecture exhibits a unique challenge to sustainability. Construction projects generally utilize large amounts of material, produce waste and oftentimes involve vetting the preservation of buildings that have historical significance against the desire for modern designs. To help alleviate this issue, the introduction of the LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design system began in April 2000 and is utilized in all phases of development. Thereupon, thousands of projects in private, public and nonprofit sectors are either LEED certified or use the LEED evaluation system. Yet, persuading others to adopt sustainable architecture is not a simple process, as it requires changing values, attitudes and behaviors. Specifically, what role can technical communicators in marketing play in convincing clients to adopt these methods? The purpose of this research study is to investigate the marketing of sustainable buildings to recommend best practices for other marketing professionals.
